The links it has with everything that is being talked about today. A powerful relic found in the dusty caves of Jerusalem! The Great Awakening! The upgrade of some individuals who will go on to develop supernatural/superhuman abilities The references to The End Times and The Hive Mind All such fascinating topics to explore which can be scary, overwhelming and confusing at times. This fantasy novel is refreshingly light given the subject matter

“Power Duels - The Mind: A Dystopian YA Fantasy Novel of Psychic Abilities, Friendship, and Self-Discovery,” by Katie Wright, is an ambitious and complicated tale of the dangers inherent with mind control when inflicted upon the population.
David Stevens’ grandfather dies in an apparent suicide the day he was to tell David the secrets surrounding a mysterious book. David takes possession of the book and with the help of a friend of his grandfather’s, uncovers a map that leads him and his friends, Ben and Kiara, to Jerusalem. Upon the discovery of bracelets and coins, Kiara seizes a bracelet and puts it on her wrist; she runs off and is pulled into the thrall of the artifact’s power and causes an “Awakening” that wreaks havoc throughout the world.
The story was not always easy for me to follow, in part because of the many instances of time changes for multiple characters. Still, has is an interesting and original plot that will appeal to readers of magical realism and dark fantasy.
